About Meadowbrook Neighborhood History

Meadowbrook History North Plainfield
North Plainfield, Nj, United States
Meadowbrook is a neighborhood in North Plainfield, NJ. The first open house was at 2pm November 15, 1936. The neighborhood was created from the former Netherwood Estate of John Taylor Johnston, 1st Pres of the Met Museum and owner of the Central NJ RR. The estate passed to his daughter, Frances "Fanny" Mali, who married Belgian Consulate General, Pierre Mali. After their passing, the Mali heirs decided to sell the Netherwood farm and estate to developers able to utilize "new" 30 year mortgages backed by the FHA. The Meadowbrook Inc architect and president was George E. T. Wells. The neighborhood is a time capsule of American tastes in home architecture for three decades. Complex events impacted the building schedule: the Great Depression 1929-1939, WWII 1939-1945, and Mr. Wells unexpected death in 1947. The final section would not be approved until 1958, built in 1963, and includes a tribute with Wells Road. Thank you for joining us.
